Hi all,

Just wondered if I could utilise your expertise a bit....!

I'm moving into my student house next week and my job is to set up the
BB for us all. It's a house with 7 of us, and its wired for a network
in all 7 rooms, but without a modem or router. So I need to know what
equipment I need to get (wired or wireless) and some advice on which
ISP to go with, cheap is good obviously, as is a high usage allowance!
Been looking at Tiscali- 2mbps, unlimited usage and modem for £17.99,
any comments?

Any help that you guys could give would be much appreciated!

Ta v much,

Chris

to use the wires an ethernet modem/router coupled to an 8-port switch
or hub would work, some folks might want the convenience of wireless
so either get a combined ADSL modem / ethernet router / wireless
jobbie or a simple access point to plug into one of the wired sockets.

"This fair usage policy automatically identifies the very small number
of extremely heavy users and manages their bandwidth only during peak
hours (being 6pm to 11pm Monday to Friday, and 12pm to 4pm on weekends
and bank holidays), to protect the service for all our other
customers. Outside peak hours, the use of the internet by these heavy
users is unaffected."

and modem for =A317.99,

the free modem is no use to you as you need ethernet. See sig for
Tiscali users, also http://www.whowantsmigration.me.uk/ and research
"Datastream" - with >100 ISPs to choose from you simply need not
consider Tiscali. Big advertising budgets should not be confused with
good services.

Do you want a service for 9 months ? about half the ISPs have 12 month
contracts, that doesn't rule them out as they may cost less over 9
months than the monthly contract ones with £40-70 setup fees.

ADSL or cable ? Depends on location. Also 8M or faster ADSL is
available in some areas - check www.samknows.com for availability.
With 7 of you a faster service like that from
http://www.f2s.net/adsl/homeuser.php for £25/month + £50 setup may be
appropriate.

Many thanks Phil, that's all been taken on board! Do you have any
suggestions for ISP's that would be appropriate, 12 month contracts are
no problem at all? Also, where would I be able to get the hardware at a
decent price? It seems that just looking around, to get a wired
router+8port hub would cost me around the same as a wireless router
(with 4 wired ports) and a couple of wifi cards, so the wireless option
would probably be best. But I put my trust in you guys!

http://www.f2s.net/adsl/homeuser.php Connect Plus £27.99 per month on
yearly contract unlimited up to 8Mbits/s where available.

http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?...entialservices Flex
Home2000 £29.99 per month.

I'm avoiding the cheapest ISPs, as you are dividing this by seven so
IMHO its worth spending a bit more for the possibility of 8M and to
avoid issues of usage levels or crap speeds or weak support

http://www.demon.net/seriousbroadband/ HomeOffice2000 £24.99 on 12
month contract is a bit cheaper, no 8M option as yet.

Look at fine print eg what do you need in the way of email addresses.

that's OK providing that covers all seven users. An 8 port switch is
less than £20, for example Ebuyer.com Quickfind code: 26038

A wireless & 4 port wired modem/router with a bundled USB adapter is
£60 Quickfind code: 77141

PCMCIA cards for <£20 QuickFind Code: 47673

illustrates the type of stuff. http://froogle.google.co.uk/ or look in
a convenient retailer for bundles / special offers etc.

Thats all cool, many thanks. The main problem with where I am is that
it's Aberystwyth (SY23 2ED), and the BB services seem to be limited to
2Mb as far as I can see using the checkers that are knocking about
which is a shame obviously. But at least the Uni has a 10Mb wireless
connection that I can use when I'm up on the campus!

you'd have saved him some time typing if that had been put in somewhere
earlier, after Phil's first post which included:

"ADSL or cable ? Depends on location. Also 8M or faster ADSL is
available in some areas..."

With seven people, you could perhaps use 2 phone lines, 2 ISPs and have
the flexibility of spreading your traffic, and have a fall-back if one
is down/cuts your service (!) I know low cost is nice, but here I've
filled more than one ISP connection, and I do not have 6 other people
to compete with for resources.

Go with one line, but don't be too surprised if one gets a phone line to
their own room, and then they'd have exclusive access, and their view
may be "s*d the others" (who still share the communal service). PGM

With wireless a neighbour might try to get traffic... with wired, the speed
for PC <-> PC transfers will be at guaranteed speed... I'm happy with wire!

An 8 port 10/100 on Ebay is about fifteen including delivery, and that
would be a new item, not used... 4 port router under 30

Check items 27.99 modem/router + 10.33 8-port switch + 7.99 delivery
ART514CX ADSL http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=5804799554
8-port switch http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=5804875862

I don't know the seller, but just spotted the info, but only 78 negative
comments back, and 22,548 positives, so hardly a dodgy guy !! Peter M.

if you have a 2M capable line BT's "up to 8M" service may be along in
6 months or so, hence I suggested ISPs angling to supply the faster
speeds.
