I am going to be moving to area where the exchange and wiring has not
been upgraded and as result current bb speeds are ridiculously low
( 256 k / 512 k ) at best

As this seems to be down to the old wires and the fact their might not
be a demand in my area ( though areas right next to it get 3g ) I was
wondering if this might be indication- where I to move - of the
popularity ,and if so what other options I have given there is no 3g
or anything above 512k.

This is quite distressing as Im am disabled and tend to be bit
housebound also.

I've even starting to wonder if I might ( dare I say it ) be able to
jump on someone elses bandwith
in the areas that do get 3g or are faster.

thanks again

matt

Satellite broadband might be an option (not to be confused with Sky's
broadband, which is ADSL):

Randomly selected links:
http://www.tariam.co.uk/products-homenet.asp
http://www.satsig.net/ivsat-europe.htm
http://www.bentley-walker.com/technology.php

It's a bit more expensive than ADSL, but maybe you could share the costs
with some neighbours - perhaps using (fixed?) wifi links between you? Also
the latency will be high so not so good for gaming or interactive sessions.

If it's two-way satellite (so you don't use a phone line as the upstream)
then you don't have to use an ISP from the UK - anyone with satellite range
over the UK will do.

You could try setting up point-to-point wifi links, which can go for a few
miles with the right antenna. Some home-grown ISPs have linked up villages
like this (mostly in the days before BT used them as free market research
for ADSL rollout). Something like:
http://www.wlan.org.uk/

I suppose there's also a small chance you might be able to use a better
antenna to get 3G - try a parabolic dish like a Sky dish or maybe a wok,
point it at the nearest 3G base (try to do this accurately) and see if you
can get a 3G signal with a handset or USB modem in the middle. Flaky 3G
isn't much fun though as the connection will keep dropping.

What the sort of minimum you think I could get away with for reliable
bandwith or at least 1mb if top is 1.8 ?

It must be less than 0. 2 miles to the coverage area

Is there no cable TV/telephone there?

Have you asked BT when the exchange is going to be upgraded?
I thought Tony Blair when in charge made some sort of commitment to give
Broadband to all.
Have you written to your MP?
Make a fuss.

I did many years ago when BT had made my exchange, well half the exchange,
an upgrade of the time to give the extra services of the STD system. Well I
was on the wrong half so did not get them, I wanted one of the services so
made a big fuss. I got it too, think they ran a cable from the upgraded
half to my connection in the old half!

Sorry to hear you are disabled, but mention that when you write or phone.
No doubt you will have a disabled association or worker get them on the
case.

telephone no cable

I contacted them and they use and they basically give me indefintes
all the time i.e. BT open makes the calls and they cant tell me
anything ( bt open also dont deal with customers so go figure )

On top this they tell me even if its upgraded at end of January in 09
then it stil might not affect where I live because the wiring to
exchange is still the same.

The trouble is too up where I am in Scotland not so many folk / client
base .

I agree totally. Making a nuisance of yourself with people that have a little
clout can work wonders.

My ex-g/f of old got her new MG Metro 'properly' repaired thanks to the local
MP. Local dealer couldn't fix it (ridiculous vibrations), so it went back to the
factory ! Plus had a loaner inbetween.

If you're in a rural area then you're probably only on 384kbps 3G. You can
get any fraction of that depending on who else is using it at the same time
and who is making calls with it. I wouldn't bank on getting anywhere near
the top rate - 100kbps is more likely on a regular basis.

512k is quite usable for most things other than video streaming.

If you can afford it you some ISP's can bond two lines together to
double the bandwidth.

How do you intend to do that?

Locally (I'm stuck with 512k), one villager couldn't get a good
connection and BT re-routed and rewired several 100m of cable. I
believe they now get 2Mb. Unfortunately that cabling doesn't come
past my way.

Good luck.
