Struggling to setup Peer-Peer (Ad-hoc)/really need help

I`ve been struggling to setup a wireless 802.11a peer-peer network between
my main computer with internet dial-up
access using Windows XP Pro & my Windows 98 Laptop for over 2 weeks !

I suspect I`m possibly missing some hardware - this is my setup:

Intel 5000 Access Point connected (crossover cable) directly to the network
slot of my motherboard (AsusA7N8X Deluxe)

Intel CardBus card plugged into my laptop

I simply want to be able to setup a network (Ad-hoc) and share the files on
both computers & dial-up internet connection on main computer.

I`ve been through the Network setup/internet sharing etc at least 10 times
but still can`t get them to work. Mobo LAN connection is set to
192.168.0.1.,
Access Point isset to 198.168.0.2., Laptop adapter uses 192.168.0.3. subnet
for each is 255.255.255.0. SSID is HOME on all machines & I use
WEP (128 bit encription) - firewall is disabled.

Whilst I can see an adapter on the Laptop, no adapter is showing on the main
computer (presumably the Access Point isnot `seen` as anything by Windows
XP)
My laptop `says` I`m connected to HOME and speeds look very good at 24 bps ?
ANY Ping commands I make from either machine time out so obviously the
connection is not working.

PROBLEM: Is it correct (okay) to simply connect the Access Point directly to
my main computer via the lan connector ? I`m NOT using a hub, switch or
router
OR should my Access Point be plugged into a Switch/Hub (presumably this
would then show up as a Network Adapter on my main computer)

Can anyone give me any guidance or pointers on what I`m likely to have wrong
?

Try setting it up in Infrastructure mode. An Access Point is happiest that
way.

Okay - thatreally has helped !

I can now see the Laptop in Network Neighbourhood on my MAIN computer
running XP Pro - but, it says I do not
have the permission levels to access the laptop.

When I go into the laptop running on Windows98, it does nothing when I go
into Network Neighbourhood, just tries
to look for something (flashlight)

I suspect I`m nearly there - how can I progress this ?

Go to My Computer on the laptop, right click on the drive you want to
share, then click Sharing and assign password(s) for the access you wish
to grant. Then back to your main computer, double click on the icon of
the Laptop and then that of the drive and answer the password challenge.
