Evning all,

Wasn't quire sure where to post this...

I would like to stop certain bits of info appearing in the headers of my
newsgroup postings (IP, posting host etc).

Do I change newsreader (Gravity 2.5) or can I do it some other way?

An NNTP-Posting-Host header is typically added by your news server,
and there's nothing your newsreader can do to stop it. Good thing too.

Spam filter: to mail me from a .com/.net site, put my surname in the headers.

Unless you go to the trouble of running your own news server and disable
the function.

I guess you have to change your news-server.

you might want to get onto plus.net and ask them to change your
hostname for your IP instead so spammers et al can't easily guess your
primary email address.

You can use anonymous SMTP servers to send your messages.

I use News Rover and it gives options to use mailanon.com, (E-Mail Removed),
remail.obscura.com and anon.efga.org
I haven't tried any of these, just noted the option. There's probably a
subscription required to use these anonymous servers.

Something else News Rover offers in it's privacy control is to select '
X-No-Archive' to the header which apparently suppresses archiving the
message although I think not all newsgroups allow it.

Most ISPs will now spot the missing line and add it. The IP will
be that of your newsserver, but unless you are in a large farm of
machines, that will be enough to identify you.

Regards,
Harry.

And find a server willing to peer with you. If you connect to your
ISP's server, it will almost certainly only accept POST rather than
IHAVE commands, so it will treat your article as a new posting and
add an NNTP-Posting-Host header regardless.

That header is for the benefit of search engines like Google, to
prevent them from returning the message in response to search
requests. I've heard that paying customers can get these articles
anyway, but I don't know whether that's true.
