Strange permissions behavior

Have Win 2k server with XP Pro clients. Have Access Database in shared
directory. 5 users have full control, one user with read-only permission.

I read only user is first to open file the full control users can only open
in read only mode, but if full control user opens first the the read only
user is read only

Ever hear of this?

has nothing to do with ntfs permissions. the problem is the "lock type" of
the access database itself.
depending on how your application opens the database, it will be locked in
one of several ways. research that and youll find your problem
