Strange ADSL behaviour

Hi All,

Been trying to help someone get their ADSL working in an big old house. They
initially had a basic ADSL modem which functioned well and then they decided
to get a router to conect a second PC.

Tests have shown line to house is fine - after 3 calls Tiscali (excuse the
language!) I eventually got them to check the line properly.

Inside there are 3 sockets in use and micro filtered - 2 downstairs and 1
upstairs. Initially the Netgear router was 'plugged' in upstairs and seemed
to function OK.
A few days later they call me saying the connection had gone. Tried original
modem and that no longer worked. Moved router downstairs to try in another
socket - still no joy. Then by chance I happened to unplug the filter from
upstairs and hey presto a solid connection!

I have very little telecoms knowledge so do not understand why this should
happen - old dodgy wiring?
I could leave the router downstairs and connect them wirelessly. However
they need a phone plugged in upstairs which I assume requires a filter,
which causes the ADSL to drop.

Thought it might be faulty microfilter but didn't have any spares with me.
However did swap them around but that didn't help. Is it just likely to be a
faulty filter?
They're quite a long way away and I don't want to make another trip without
having some ideas of things to try.

TIA,
relkeel

it could be a faulty filter, but the faulty one may be elsewhere ie
its interaction between two filters that causes the problem.

You can have a single filtered system with all extensions off a
filtered connection if you put your mind to it.

Indeed, and you don't need to use one of the faceplates to replace
the one at the BT Master Socket - it's probably worth having some
spare microfilter(s) but how many would want a spare faceplate?
