I am using a Centrino based notebook with built in 802.11b wireless.
It works very well with my Realtek 802.11b access point, but when I
tried it at a friends place with his 802.11g access point I got some
strange results. I could ping a computer on his network and some
sites. A tracert to yahoo.com shows the first 7 ok but no reply from
8 onwards. Web pages don't display. The same computer connected
to his router with a cable works as it should.

Maybe you friend has the router setup to filter out IP ranges through
port 80 (www). Connecting through the wireless give one IP address.
Connecting through the wired NIC give another. Have your friend check
his router configuration. Also, is your friends access point
configured for mixed-mode (b/g)?
