Hi,

Please browse to the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307162 as it explains
exactly why I can't print over the local area network from my XP pro mobile
client machine to a printer that is attached to a Windows 98/Me print server
machine. Eventhough both my Windows PCs are configured with the WORKGROUP
setting in Network properties, it mentions something about Network domain
credentials. Normally domain credentials should only apply where clients are
connected to a domain network and not a workgroup environment as is the case
here. Up to now the problem was pointing to a fault with my printer
manufacturer but I would be inclined to say that the problem is definitely a
Microsoft related issue. It's crucial that you read this article above as it
explains the exact same symptoms that I'm encountering "You can successfully
delete the printer, reconnect to the printer, and view the printer queue
status." Also, I'm using Windows XP professional as my client PC and Windows
98 as the print server. This is same as in article 307162.

What is Microsoft going to do to correct this? I have contacted Microsoft
by phone since and they told me they won't deal with any issue on this
printer networking issue unless I pay a service charge of around €120 ex vat.
I declined to pay this charge as matter of principle as this cost would
nearly exceed the cost of my printer. The normal standard charge is around
€49 ex VAT but this would not apply here as my issue would be treated as
business case.

At this stage, I definitely feel that this is a Microsoft problem. It's
either due to a network domain cache security issue as explained in the
article or due to new security windows updates that have been applied in the
last few months. I don't think it is a printer driver issue anymore.
Besides, I did manage to print from my Lexmark printer over the network 6
months ago which should rule out the printer manufacturer. It's not a
networking issue either as I can access all resources over the LAN from my XP
laptop. I can also print locally.

Even if I purchased a new Laserjet printer or inkjet printer, I would still
have the same problem as the new printer would be connected to the 98 machine
and I wouldn't be able to print over the LAN from my XP pro laptop. A
Lexmark supervisor is going to contact me next week in order to provide some
workaround to resolve issue. Somehow, I don't think it will help as this is
not a printer driver issue.

Anyway, I would be obliged if anybody can keep me posted w.r.t. this matter
as I am anxious to get a resolution soon.

Thanks,

Martin

For the last time.... make both users and passwords the same on the xp and
98 pc and you can print TO the 98 printserver FROM the xp box.
Good Luck.
