status stuck on "acquiring access"

My laptop is stuck on acquiring access status. What are the common
issues related to this prompt? My roommate's laptop connects ok just 5
feet away on the other side of our room.

No way to tell without some clue as to what hardware and software
you're using. However, my guess(tm) is that it's failing because it
has the wrong encryption key. If you're using WEP, please use the
longer Hex key instead of the ASCII key as there are key conversion
issues.
