Static IP on a network

Hi folks,

Apologies for the probably n00b question:

I do a lot of p2p on our network and it's annoying that every time I log on
to the net my IP changes from between 192.168.0.* (* = anything from 2 - 5)
depending on how many others are online on our home network. I then have to
go into the router and change the IP on the port forwarding section to match
mine, for my selected p2p programme. Over time this becomes quite annoying.

My question is therefore, is it possible so that when I log on, the network
automatically assigns me the same ip address all the time, so I don't have to
change it in port forwarding section of the router. If this is possible, how
do I do it?

I'm all legal by the way )

Thanks in advance!

You may have many options. Setup static IP in windows. To do that, go to the properties of TCP/IP. Or you may do Mac control if you have a router that comes with this feature.

The DHCP server function in the Windows Server OS has this capability.
However, assuming that the source of your dynamic IPs is the router, it
depends on the feature set of that device. Many routers support IP
reservations based upon MAC address - consult your manual.

As an alternative you could assign a static IP to your computer. You should
exclude this IP from the scope being pumped out by the router.
