I've just set up a network using Netgear's MR814 router connected to
an RCA cable modem. I have one PC cabled directly to the router which
is connected to the cable modem using Comcast's service. That PC can
ping the router and any address just fine but when I start up either
Internet Explorer or Netscape the system freezes and then throws the
computer into a restart. This is on a Windows 98 SE machine with 256
MB of RAM. My other 3 machines running in wireless mode with the
router work just fine. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

This is just a wild guess, but if 2 different big applications crash a PC,
I'm tempted to think it might be bad RAM.

Something like Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/) might give you a quick
answer. Or swap the RAM with another machine.

I ran Memtest86 last night and all tests passed. The funny thing is
that both Netscape and IE work fine over a dial-up connection. They
only crash when connected to the Netgear router on the cable modem.

What is the O/S on the other three machines that have no issues?

Two of them are Windows 98 and the third is a laptop with Windows 2000.

When a Win9x machine restarts all by it's self that's almost allways a
hardware problem. What happens if you plug this PC directly into the cable
modem?

I'll make a suggestion. Try putting Win 2k on that machine and see if things
become stable.

I ended up reloading Windows and then installing IE 6. Seems to be working fine now.
