problem solved ,
after updating everything i could think of , i finally gave up on it
and installed the spare asrock mobo along with a new amd xp2200+ cpu ,
had to reinstall windows xp ,but it started up first time with no
problems ,
it must have been something to do with the gigabyte mobo that took a
dislike to the setup with the adaptor,
the other older computer i tried it on had a gigabyte mobo inside ,but
everything worked fine on that model so i guess it was just the
ga-71xeh board that is the problem,
thanks for all suggestions and advice regarding the problem,
