Stable ADSL Hardware

I am completely and utterly sick to the stomach of shoddy ADSL hardware.

Can somebody please, please, please recommend something stable? I'm not
talking about "i only have to reset it once a month!!", I want something
that is well-engineered, totally bullet-proof and if it does go down (Only
because of the ISP or BT) has no problems whatsoever bringing the
connection back up the very second it's usable again. Good diagnostics to
help me diagnose line problems would also be a bonus.

I use Linux and FreeBSD exclusively on my network so unless you can
suggest a modem that works with them and isn't a SpeedTouch 330 or Sagem
F@st 800 (I've tried them both and they're pieces of sh*t) then it's going
to have to be some kind of Ethernet hardware.

I have a Zen account with 8 IPs. Ideally I want something that has a
half-bridge mode so that my FreeBSD gateway can grab the public IP using
DHCP or whatever, but if there's nothing that matches my stability
requirements that does that then I'm willing to use something that simply
supports routed IP. NAT is completely out of the question.

It goes without saying that I'm willing to pay a (reasonable) premium for
quality.

Many thanks.

Simon

Draytek Vigor 2600 range.

Judging by the OP's demands it appears that even the pretty reasonable
performance and reliability of Draytek's kit wouldn't meet his standards.

I was thinking maybe Westel or even Cisco.

If that's as reliable as my 530, then I'd pass - my ISP is trying to give me
a THIRD unit, after my first two both failed in less than a year.

Also: http://mrtg.munk.nu/#st510_uptime

Looks like a piece of junk just like the 330.

standard commercial box would be a Cisco router - a recent type is the 1801
router

ADSL + ISDN BRI WAN, Ethernet WAN, 8 port Ethernet switch.

Baseline router lists at approx $1000, but Cisco surcharge for various
software loads - some of which you will need if you want VPN and proper
firewall features (rather than just NAT) - the software can at least double
the cost.....
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5853/index.html
there are options for wireless a/b/g interfaces if you want them.

i think you need to define what you want and get a box spec-ed up if you go
this way, or you may end up with the wrong set of options.

cisco only sell in europe via resellers - not sure who to go to buy a 1 off.

i suggest you talk to Zen and see if they have a high end or a business
oriented router they support.

Is there nothing less expensive than that which meets my requirements? All
I want is something to either route or bridge my Ethernet network and my
ISP.
