SSID = SSID but NO connection

Hi, I have bought a Sitecom wireless PCI card and have set it up to
match the SSID name to what I have installed on the modem. On my laptop,
exactly the same settings work fine. However, to connect my home PC, I
first need to disable the SSID check in the modem and only then does my
home PC 'see' the network. The SSID in the PC is EXACTLY the same as in
the modem. Why is it not working?

When you say modem, are you referring to the typical 56k dialup
data/fax modem, cable modem or do you mean wireless router or Wireless
Access Point (WAP)?

I am referring to the WAP. Some more info: on my laptop I am using the
sitecom software, on the PC I use the standard Windows XP functionality
for wireless networks, because the sitecom s/w did not work here at all.

Being that you have confirmed that you meant WAP, I am assuming you
have a router also. Having said that, do the following:
1. Make sure that DHCP is "ENABLED" on the router.
2. DISABLE DHCP on the WAP.
3. Connect an ethernet cable from the WAP to one of the LAN ports on
the router. The router's DHCP will assign the WAP an IP address.
4. Configure the WAP settings to match that of the wireless card,
i.e. SSID, Encryption keys, Channel, etc.
5. If you want to be able to see the WAP's browser menu and the
router's browser menu, make sure that their LAN IP address is in the
same subnet. (EXAMPLE: WAP=192.168.1.135 / 255.255.255.0
Router=192.168.1.150/255.255.255.0)
6. You are now done as for as being able to access the internet from
all PCs. File and print sharing is a different issue. I hope I've
answered your question. If I misunderstood your posting, forgive me.

I think I have not expressed myself clearly, but I am learning wireless
terminology on the fly. Sorry about that. Anyway, I do not have a
separate router. I have a ADSL modem with a wireless link to my PC and
laptop. The modem allows for more wireless connections. As I said, the
SSID is exactly the same on the access point, the PC and the laptop. The
laptop sees the wireless network; the PC does not.
