"ssh -X user@server" hangs on logout

Hi!

Why is it that you cannot log out after logging in with "ssh -X" or
"ssh -Y" on a server? The session just hangs and you have to kill the
ssh process. It's quite annoying in the long run. Is there an easy way
around this?

If something is using the ssh tunnel, ssh will not exit until the things
using the tunnel shut down.

Ok. Suppose I log on to a server with the -X option, start XEmacs and
then quit XEmacs. What is still running? (Since ssh will hang on
logout.)

If you're running KDE, then it's got all sorts of DCOP stuff hanging
around that takes a while to quit.

Try logging out and waiting a couple of minutes. My experience is that
if everything really has been closed down then ssh will quit well before
that time.

I'm running Gnome on one of the machines and Sun Solaris on the other.
It works just fine to logout from an ssh -X session from Gnome to Gnome
or Solaris to Solaris. But not from Gnome to Solaris. Even if I wait
for an hour.
