I have a linux machine which I access remotely. Sometimes, when the box is
heavily loaded, or I am running an intensive process, my ssh connection to
it drops, and then I have to wait about 15 minutes for the firewall to let
me back in.

I have ClientAliveInterval set to 120 in sshd_config.

Any hints on what could be causing the drops, and how to avoid them would be
appreciated.

check the driver man pages or readme for any options related to
throughput. Sometimes they can be configured to produce smooth computer
UI while choppy internet, or smooth internet while choppy UI.

go with smooth internet. or upgrade it. But I suspect its the on board
driver.
