SRV Records incorrect

Hello all!

We've migrated a W2K domain to a W2K3 domain. The W2K server had to be
removed, so we placed a new W2K3 server.
I've got the W2K3 server up and running, clients connecting without any
problems. I've run DCPROMO on my old W2K server to remove it from the
domain.

When I check the SRV records in my DNS server (f.a. the _ldap in
Default-First-Site-Name._sites.dc._msdcs.evers_nt) it says the "Host
offering this service" is the W2K machine, but it does not exist anymore!!

I've tried several things: running dcdiag /fix, netdiag /fix, ipconfig
/registerdns. I've checked to see if my DNS allows Dynamic Updates and it's
set to "nonsecure and secure".

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks a lot!

Sander Weijers

When you migrated win2K domain to win2003, the default first site name
remained the same,
and so it created SRV and NS records to win2K name.

Default first site can be anything, it will not make a problem as such.
Even if you un-install DNS and re-install it will show the same old name.
To change it, I think the only option is remove DNS and remove Domain (AD)
and reinstall it.

Seems logically, but that means I have to recreate around 200 users and
profiles, 150 machine accounts, re-distribute the user rights on several
folders and reconfigure MSExchange and its mailboxes. So that's acutally not
a good solution....

It's not really about the default first site name, but about the data from
the srv-files.

Well with all those users groups its definately not good
to wipe out and reinstall AD.

Presently where exactly you are facing problems because of the old SRV
records? (e.g. Can't run licensing, can configure Domain Group Policies..
Problem in DNS etc ?)

I'm not sure if it has anyting to do with it, but my old NT4 server cannot
gain access to the new W2K3 server (and reverse). I'm also unable to browse
the network.

I am not so sure, but you can try this:
On the server under System32\config folder,
there is netlogon.dns file. Back up this file first.
Then open the file with notepad.
Do replace win2kold with win2k3new name, Replace all. Save the
file.
Leave netlogon.dnb file as it is, so that in case of problem the it will
load the file from the back up.
Reboot the machine.

Try AD Sites and Services - make sure the new DC is a Global Catalog server.
FSMO roles should be transferred as part of the dcpromo demotion process.
However, you also have to manually create new GCs.

If this does not solve your problem, try ntdsutil metadatacleanup to make
sure the old DC is removed from the site. The process is decribed in :

Enable scavenging of your DNS zone(s). Seriously.

Folks, either I'm reading the question differently than you are, or
you're reading too much into the question. All that Sander said is that
the old server's records aren't going away. He didn't say that the new
server's records weren't there. He didn't say that anything wasn't
working. He didn't say that the records for the new server weren't
accurate. ALL he said is that the old server's records hadn't
automagically disappeared, and they're not going to if he hasn't enabled
scavenging of his DNS zone.

As far as why the NT4 box can't access the new box, I'd be looking at
SMB signing. What SP level is the NT box at?
