HI.

Could someone explain to my why the squirrelmail RPMs put all the web files
in /usr/share instead of /var/www/html?

I just setup a symlink in /var/www/html (and I have everything working), but
I'm just wondering why everything is in the "wrong" place.

i'm on RH9 and squirrel1.4.2

thx,
john

Not sure if I'm right or not (it wouldn't be the first time I wasn't and
won't be the last), but perhaps locating the squirrelmail files outside of
the default web document space is to minimize the possibility of someone
with too much time on their hands exploiting a system or manipulating the
squirrelmail files to perform some task other than their intended function.

When I first looked into squirrelmail, I thought its choice of installation
location was odd as well. But, the above explanation, right or wrong, does
make sense.

Hope this helps.

Greg

That's half of it - the other half is that the Redhat apache config is
decidedly odd. I installed the standard apache distro on a redhat
system once.. Took me a half an hour to find where the new binary was
put! Docroot was also moved. Redhat mucked with the locations of
many packages included in its distro. Not complaining - just an
observation.

If you are using the RH9 RPM from squirrelmail.org there is no need for the
symlink because it installs a squirrelmail.conf file in /etc/http/conf.d
(off the top of my head) that sets up the alias for you.

i shall check on that. thanks.

p.s. barring that, is a symlink the best way of doing that in general to
directories outside webroot? Or the alias way?

I've used both in the past. Right now, I lean toward the alias method
since it provides more control over access to and operations within
directories outside the webroot. It may not stop someone from causing
problems, but (hopefully) it will make them work a little harder. Some may
call it paranoia. I call it erring on the conservative side (even with 4+
years linux experience, I still learn something new every day).
