Squid running behind SOCKS firewall

Here's my setup, getting closer to completion thanks in no small part
to the good folks in coln.

Mandrake 9.1, diskless workstations. I need to control what websites
the client machines can get to. So I installed Squid, which is up and
running. However, when I test with squidclient or the browser, I get
a TCP_MISS and 504 in the record in access.log, which is 'gateway
timeout'. Is the squid proxy not able to talk past the Socks
firewall? If I take the proxy out of the browser I can surf to my
hearts' content. Put it in and I can't get anywhere.

So is there a way to make squid and socks play nice? And it's a socks
4 server, so I can't do the 'socksify' trick. Or is there some other
application that will let me filter what domains the users can get to?

TIA, maddman

Okay, a little more info.

When I run the ./squidclient for a domain outside our local network,
it comes back with the TCP_MISS/504 and an 'alarm clock' message at
the prompt. Is this some kind of timeout? I've been doing searches
on this term but can't get any clue what this means.

I also found an app called proxychains. Easy to set up, you can
direct traffic to go through a series of proxies. So I tried it going
=>squid=>sock and =>socks=>squid. Either one gives me the same
result, "alarm clock".

If someone could at least clue me into what alarm clock means, I would
be eternally grateful .
