squid and dod

I can't get SuSE 8.2 to dial on demand when squid is running.
It works fine before squid is started. If I manually establish a
connection with ISDN, I can then use squid on the network.
I'm also having difficulty getting squid to start automatically, but it
works fine when started via Webmin.
Stop me if this is too trivial.;-)
I'm also trying to pursuade RH9 to identify correctly a pcmcia Belkin
F506020u wireless card.
