What it means is that someone is trying to send vast amounts of data to
your network in order to crash the computers as they would become over
loaded. But the router is sitting infront of the machines stopping it.

As to the router hanging, I am not sure that it would affect the router.
But I would not think so.
If it continues to happen, I would report it.
