Hi
Am I wasting my time trying to get Nildram to sort out my speed issues? They
have asked for even more speedtests (using the BT tester). Will they ever
say "Sorry, that's just the way it is on our over-congested pipes", or do I
need a MAC now?!

My experience with Nildram:
First they ask you to do all the tests to prove the problem isn't in
your line or equipment. Then they ask you to do it all again. Then
they blame it on a congested exchange. Then, if you get information
about they exchange they say if it's not the exchange it is the
connection from the exchange.

No matter how many tests you do or how much information you give them
they will never admit that it is congestion in their own pipes. After
several months and dozens of emails they will just blame it on BT,
shrug their shoulders, and say there's nothing they can do.

I know you're right.
Did you move to Zen?

No... not yet...
A mixture of inertia and wanting to make sure that I'm not jumping from
the frying pan into the fire. Maybe so many people now have broadband
that all ISPs are suffer congestion. Also, unless there is LLU at the
exchange then it's so easy for an ISP just to blame BT. As soon as I
get some spare time I'll look into alternatives and maybe see if LLU
might soon be enabled in my exchange.

How much are you paying ?

Idnet offer MAX with 5GB inluded downloads (£1 per GB therafter) now for
£17.99. Their own network is free of congestion, contention, traffic management
or shaping or any of those nasty things the 'big' ISPs use to slow you down.

30GB included for £24.99 btw.
http://www.idnet.com/broadband/default.jsp

They only require a one month contract and migrations are free.

Plus you get a Service Level Agreement (SLA). Very few (no ?) big ISPs offer
this as standard on ordinary domestic accounts.

They are very good and when they answer the phone you're talking to someone who
actually knows their stuff.

Their phone number is a free number too but they refuse to sell you a package
including phone service and TV.

£29.49 : this includes a static IP (Sometimes, but not often, I run a game
server. Easy ways round this though.) Also includes 500mins national phone
calls. Peak time downloads of 50GB, and unused amounts can roll over to the
next month.

I've only ever gone over 30GB once in three years. But if download speeds
were better (and no throttling of certain data types), then I might hit 30GB
that more often.

Good.

vivacity, £20/month 1 month contract, 30Gb peak, 300Gb of peak, no port
throttling, guaranteed at least 20% of max connection at all times. phone
(0800) answered swiftly by humans who are helpful.

Thanks.
Too many beers!
What does "guaranteed at least 20% of max connection at all times" mean?

I forgot to say that they will provide a static IP as well. I think it's static
indefinitely but do ask.

I don't know if they're still doing the referals thing but if you mention that
you were introduced by Graham Stevenson we may both benefit slightly
financially.

I can truly recommend them. They have fixed 2 problems for me that needed BT's
chain to be yanked to fix it which Plusnet simply couldn't or wouldn't do.

Never heard of Vivacity before. Couldn't find them using Google. But then,
it's VIVACITI isn't it!
A guarantee of 20% equates to the slow speed I get now. My full speed
connection is 5Mb/s, 20% would be 1Mb/s. This is my peak-time problem at the
moment.
