One or two of the recent threads have mentioned speedtester.bt.com but
some of the posts offer conflicting advice.

My not very good connection to sky broadband connect (ie via BT) came
up with these stats.

<QUOTE>

IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
DSL connection rate: 416 kbps(UP-STREAM) 480 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 225 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

</QUOTE>

I've been checking the DSL sync rate at fairly regular intervals and
the downstream seems to vary between 448k and 640k going over 700k on
occasions (but not lasting more than a few hours at that rate) and
just once in about 8 months dipping below 400k.

I know all that depends pretty much on when the re-sync takes place
but I can pretty much guarantee it will be 416k or better irrespective
of the time. It will sync at a SNR margin around 6.

The bit I am concerned about is this IP profile which seems to be
restricting the download speed to 250k irrespective of the DSL sync
rate being higher.

Does anyone know what stages these "IP profile" speeds go up in?

Do I have to average 500k before it steps up? And will it do that
automatically (it's ADSL Max)?

It says in the results to contact the isp (Sky) to discuss. Is there
any point in doing that? Can they increase that IP profile number
without it affecting the connection stability? I am paying for up to 8
Meg.

Thanks

Jim.

Note that changes due later in the year will improve matters slightly
for people with such low sync rates:

According to that article, the "later in the year" you mention is
tomorrow. Hopefully the date hasn't been put back since the article
was written in May.

The 350k IP Profile rate looks interesting for me. It doesn't actually
say what the 3 day sync speed for this needs to be but I would guess
from the other numbers it will be 416k. That should give me a general
350k speed with it only occasionally dipping back to 250k. If the
threshold is 448k (which seems a bit high) I will be spending more
time at 250k

Do you know what the actual threshold is?

Jim.

The lower threshold for the new 350 profile is 416kbps, and yes the new
system is due to come online tomorrow, the 31st.

The figures are:

Min sync IP profile
288 250
416 350
576 500
864 750
1152 1000
1440 1250
1728 1500
2016 1750
2272 2000

Regards,

All this depends on the type of insulation used.

you're receiving it too

If you can't stay above 576k sync you get a 250 profile until the new
ones kick in imminently.

I just did another test and my connection is now running at the new
350 profile.

Thanks

Jim.
