Hi

I have used the following two speed test sites for some time, and they've
both given consistent results of about 1.4MB/s, which is about the max for
my line.

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

But recently, at all times of the day, the first site has been giving
download speeds of about 0.5MB/s. This seems to be on all of the speed test
sites that link to this sort of test (you know, the ones with the two speedo
dials).

Why would there be such a change?

Welcome to the reliability of online checkers. Far better using a
complete test suite.

My fault, I wasn't clear in my OP.
Only the first site now shows speeds of 0.5MB/s. The other site still shows
a healthy 1.4MB/s.
Sync speeds, SNR, etc are the same as always.

iplayer downloads are over 1.1MB/s (for the programmes I normally fetch).

I don't think there is an issue with download speed, but just the routes to
the test server must have become more congested. Or is that total b**locks?

1.4MB/s is unbelievable. Or did you mean 1.4Mb/s?

Doesn't respond properly ! Hardly an encouraging sign.

Usually underestimates.

Now try this. (google bbmax). http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Who is the ISP and why would you leave such critical info out ?

And what are your sync speeds ?

So far you have provide ZERO useful info.

We need router or modem diagnostic results like attenuation and sync rates plus
the name of your ISP.

Twit (presumed from post content) probably has no idea of the difference.
