What speed should I expect

I have recently installed 1mb ADSL from Metronet, I frequently check my
speed at ADSLGuide and the Liberty Broadband Windsor Hall Speed Tester, and
am disappointed to find I am getting readings mainly around 500K bits per
sec, often falling much lower and occasionally rising to 750 or 800K, only
once has it been as high as 1000K.

Ping rates to UK addresses are between 32 and 39ms and to the States around
100ms.

Is this to be expected? or is this poor performance.

Does the fact that I have reached 1000K on at least one occasion mean that
my system at my end is ok?

Just checked capacity at our exchange (Ventnor) on Broadband Resource and
IPStream VP status is Red, I guess this is my problem. Upgrade date is 7
March, maybe speed will improve after that date.

Not sure about American sites, but that's poor to UK sites. I get about
20ms to a fast site such as jolt.co.uk

Not good IMHO.

Like you say in your follow-up post, I think it's congestion at your
exchange.
