Speed/Line Testing

Hi all

I have posted one or two questions to this group and have received excellent
assistance which has enabled the setup of networked (wired) broadband.
Dipping in to the group I notice many people discussing results of equipment
and line testing and, although I do not believe there are issues with my
install, would like to test the arrangement to obtain some idea of
performance.
Can anyone provide links to sites which explain testing methods and
interpretation of results please. I notice terminology like SNR values for
example which will need some explanation to a numpty such as what I am.

TIA

Phil

This was a very good link, I thank you.

I must admit that I do not fully understand everything that it says, but
will persevere and follow the following links.

I wonder if anyone can answer this little problem.

I am with Force9 and after say 6pm, I am unable to access my website server
or use a program called Limewire. Yet 12 hours later (6am) everything is
fine and dandy with superfast connection speeds. I am using broadband...

That sounds like some kind of throttling used to manage demand at peak
times. Not sure about your web server issue, however. Is your web server
hosted on your broadband connection, and you can't access it remotely? Or
are you trying to access a remote web server?

Isn't limewire a p2p file sharing application ?

You'll probably find that Force9 aka Plusnet is restricting such traffic at peak
periods.

Bob Pullen (from Plusnet) who just posted in this thread should be able to
advise you about that.

Hmmm, that's quite odd. We do manage P2P traffic but it shouldn't stop
you using it entirely. Do you know what account type you're on?

If you can confimr what account type you have and don't mind posting
your peak time usage figures here then I can probably advise further:

https://portal.plus.net/view_my_broa...sage/index.php

Regarding your website server, how are you trying to access it? Using FTP?

Kind Rgds,

Thanks Bob

Excellent source of reference.
I will look at invesigating the router logs/stats and post back when I get
lost.
Rather fortunate that your response was covered the issues, as it looks like
the thread has been hijacked by this constructor TP.

Phil
