Speed increases

Hello,

I've heard rumours that BT is going to increase broadband speeds in the
UK sometime later this year

Would anyone have a link for infromation about what the increases will
be?

I manage four UK locations from Canada and an increase would be really
welcome, especially the upload speed which would improve VoIP to these
locations immensely

Thanks in advance

Julius

You should speak to your UK ISP to see how they plan to provide speed
increases in the first instance.

I suggest you go to www.ADSLguide.org and there'll be various news
items about "Max DSL" (or similar). In brief, the expectation is that
BT exchanges will soon (end March, though that timetable may
'slip') be capable of providing up to 8000 kbps download and
a higher upload speed (up to around 500 kbps for residential
and up to about 850 kbps for business, but I haven't been
following the details as upload is not very important for me).

Other firms (Be, Bulldog, easynet, Zen) may be offering 8000
kbps now on LLU (local loop unbundling, where firm rents a
phone line from BT and cost of line rental and services are in
a single bill for end user), and Be is offering up to 24000 kbps.

SDSL has come down in price, and more widely available, so
your business applications might be better suited to it. Peter.

It will be 31st March although that's only the date that ISPs will be able
to order upgrades on almost all lines. The actual upgrades will take
several months for BT to process.

The upload speed is dependant upon whether you use the Office or Consumer
product. The maximum upload speed is better with the Office product at
over 800Kb/s with the maximum being 480Kb/s on the Consumer product.

These are best speeds and the service will be rate adaptive so you may not
see upload speeds so high.

For VoIP and similar services your main concern will be your ISP's network
as the increased bandwidth availability may mean some ISPs don't always
have sufficient network capacity to handle the peak periods.

Lie :-)
Where did you get this info from?

And where did you get this from?
Not sure about "business" but for end-user it would be 288kbps.

True, very true indeed.

Really? So even with 8 Mbps download, you're *still* stuck with 288 kbps
upload? There's asymmetric and there's taking the piss.

I realised that ADSL had a faster download than upload speed, but I'm sure
I'm not the only one who assumed that the upload speed of 1 Mbps, 2 Mbps and
8 Mbps links would increase in proportion - ie that a constant percentage of
the overall bandwidth would be allocated to upload.

832kb/s and 448kb/s. from http://samknows.com/broadband/

I don't think you'll ever see an upload speed of higher than around 800Kb/s
on ADSL. IIRC 8Mb/s download and 800Kb/s upload are the limits of ADSL (and
thus all ADSL hardware in use). Any faster and you'll needs ADSL2 or better.

Are you talking raw speed, or payload?

My residential Max is currently reading (according to the router
itself):

Downstream Speed 6048 Kbps
Upstream Speed 448 Kbps

AdslGuide speed test reports the upstream speed (at the moment) to be
373 actual, 402 inc.overheads.

cheers

It's true - read the BT Press release.
