Ask a meaningful question & you may get a meaningful answer..

It's pratical to download DVD movies at any speed, if you've got the time,
patience & connection time...

It depends on the newsserver.
I've downloaded a DVD from the plusnet newsserver, without problems,
or having to go elsewhere for fills.
(I had an original which wouldn't read.)

In theory, you can about do a DVD a day on a 512K connection.

I have 512 at home and it takes about 15 minutes round trip to
Blockbuster and back to rent one.

You could but it would depend on the length of the film, how often and how
many you want to download. It should also be added that you would obviously
be downloading from legal sites...

Be careful obivously to avoid ADSL services which place caps on service, and
also note that even the unlimited ones might get a tad touchy if you were
downloading dvd's all the time / every day - ADSL is a contended service
(i.e. 50:1 etc) that means you have to share your 512 with 50 others - they
won't be very happy if your using it 1:1.

That's not a DVD film, that is a film ripped from a DVD and compressed.
If the OP wants to download DVD images then they're more likely to be 4
gigs or so.
If the OP just wants to download films then 700Mb is what I find more
common than 640-650 as most people use 80min cdrs and the extra 50 Meg
makes all the difference in quality.

A typical DVD is alround 4.3Gig so should take around 24 hours at
full 512k speed.

Personnally I get xvid or divx of DVDs as they take arund 4-5 hours
instead.

A full DVD is 4.5GB
4.5GB = 4,500MB
4,500MB = 4,500,000(ish)KB

512Kb = 64KB

So 4,500,000 / 64 = 70313 seconds
= 1172 minutes
= 19.5 hours

So there you go. 1 DVD = 19.5 hours at full download speed.
(Many films are downloaded in VCD/SVCD format which average at about
1.5GB - so about 6 hours)

I'm sure someone may correct my maths.
