What speed can I expect as all checks differ?

I have just asked for an upgrade to my 1mb BB service - to the up to 8mb
service.
However I am mystified as different sites give me widely varying estimates
of how fast my connection will be - from 1mb as present up to at least 4mb.
Which would be the best site to check with?

Nobody can say for sure because it really depends on so many factors. What
sort of SNR and attentuation does your router report at present?

Which sites have you tried? The BT checker (sorry, I don't have the link
to hand this minute) will (even for short distances to the exchange) give
figures of "up to 6.5 Mbps". Whether that is based on an 'average' level
of attenuation for the postcode, or a check of some database to give them
a 'distance' to the exchange, I don't know, but having got some figure it
is then a bit of a lottery as to how fast you'll see your connection with
the various traffic throttling systems some ISPs let loose to limit their
heavier users, and even if the link to the exchange is at that full speed
(8128/488 kbps for down/upstream) then there will be other places where a
bit of congestion could slow traffic down to a crawl, so your data is now
getting to you at the speed of the *slowest* link between you and source!

Assuming you are using Zen, you might also watch out that your traffic is
going to be capped to a certain level (for downloads at least) on the "up
to 8Mbps". Others would love your slower, stable, unlimited, connection!

Operation Data
Upstream
Downstream

Noise Margin
26 dB
23 dB

Output Power
12 dBm
19.5 dBm

Attenuation
31.5 dB
52 dB

Is this the info you are asking for. Sorry if I am a bit thick?

Are Zen offering you a product based on the BT MAXDSL system? If so the 3 to
4MB would sould likely based on the figures you gave. With luck you should
get more.

I am having this one but can't see where it may say anything about BT
MAXDSL?

AFAIK this is based on the BT MAXDSL product. So you should get whatever
speed your line will support up to the theoretical maximum.

I think BT Wholesale calls their products
IPStream Max and IPStream Max Premium

(the latter being their business service, with higher charges, but also
guaranteed higher priority over ordinary IPStream Max customers)

Any product supplied from BT Wholesale at "up to 8000" is one of these
DSL Max products (DSL Max and Max DSL seem to be used interchangeably)

And a higher target upstream data rate.
