OK we all know the deal with that virus that mines this
forum for emails and sends em to you in batches..... the
question now... how to stop it? Is there a patch or
anything out to stop it? COME ON it's getting ridiculous.
Who in there right mind would download that BS exe. Anyone
with any ideas should step up and post it up. I had one
but I took a lok at the emails and you would only spare
about 2 emails of about 50 or so. anything is all good.

-Peace

Ask your ISP two questions:

1. Are they scanning inbound email to remove viruses such as this at the
server?
2. Are they scanning outbound email to ensure that they're not spewing
viruses at the rest of the Internet?

Don't settle for "yes, no" - make sure that they know you're expecting them
to stop peeing in the pool as well as filtering the water in their own
particular shallow end.

Okay, so you want the 'spam' to stop, but you don't want anyone at your ISP
to scan the data stream to prevent it?

Here's the method:

1. Get a list of the names and phone numbers of everyone who runs a Windows
system.
2. Call them up, ask them if they've got a virus scanner, and if they say
"no", take their address details.
3. Place a bulk order with one of the virus scanner manufacturers, one for
each person whose address details you took down.
4. Mail the virus scanners to each person who doesn't have one, and help
them to get the scanner installed. Console those who lost data.
5. Sit back and watch as the virus load drops immediately.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do other than change your email
address. We all want the spam to stop.

Do not use your real email address when posting to public areas in the
future. Once you get the ball rolling, there is no stopping it.

Sorry.

The 'spam' is being sent by people who are infected with a virus.

To stop the spam from being sent requires that everyone who is currently
infected with that virus should remove the virus.

It is futile to metaphorically stomp your feet and demand that the spam
stops, because the machines sending you the spam are infected with viruses,
and don't give two hoots whether you want them to stop sending.

If you cannot install a filter to stop the spam from reaching you, you will
simply have to keep deleting it until people finally get the message that
they need to remove the viruses from their system.

For those of you concerned (even slightly) that you might be infected, but
who don't wish to buy a virus scanner, some of the major antivirus software
vendors offer online scanning for free. I have previously recommended
http://security.symantec.com as a good online scanner, though having
recently installed Norton Antivirus 2004, I can't recommend that as a piece
of software for general consumption - its email handling is really far below
that which I'd expect, and when you query them about it, they tell you
simply to disable email scanning. [If it doesn't matter that you disable
the feature, why is the feature in the product and enabled in the first
place?] The online scanner, however, remains a recommendation of mine, and
will scan your entire system for viruses.

There are other virus scanner vendors who have entire antivirus packages
available for free. The one I hear quoted most often is AVG
AntiVirus from Grisoft, at http://www.grisoft.com.

Sadly, while the antivirus scanners will "defang" any virus that is sent to
you in email, I have yet to see one that will delete the detritus that comes
along with them. Since I receive a thousand or more every day, I have a
relatively simple mail filter. Anything that has the word "Cumulative" in
it goes into a folder for later searching.
