The 'spam' is being sent by people who are infected with a virus.
To stop the spam from being sent requires that everyone who is currently
infected with that virus should remove the virus.
It is futile to metaphorically stomp your feet and demand that the spam
stops, because the machines sending you the spam are infected with viruses,
and don't give two hoots whether you want them to stop sending.
If you cannot install a filter to stop the spam from reaching you, you will
simply have to keep deleting it until people finally get the message that
they need to remove the viruses from their system.
For those of you concerned (even slightly) that you might be infected, but
who don't wish to buy a virus scanner, some of the major antivirus software
vendors offer online scanning for free. I have previously recommended
http://security.symantec.com as a good online scanner, though having
recently installed Norton Antivirus 2004, I can't recommend that as a piece
of software for general consumption - its email handling is really far below
that which I'd expect, and when you query them about it, they tell you
simply to disable email scanning. [If it doesn't matter that you disable
the feature, why is the feature in the product and enabled in the first
place?] The online scanner, however, remains a recommendation of mine, and
will scan your entire system for viruses.
There are other virus scanner vendors who have entire antivirus packages
available for free. The one I hear quoted most often is AVG
AntiVirus from Grisoft, at
http://www.grisoft.com.
Sadly, while the antivirus scanners will "defang" any virus that is sent to
you in email, I have yet to see one that will delete the detritus that comes
along with them. Since I receive a thousand or more every day, I have a
relatively simple mail filter. Anything that has the word "Cumulative" in
it goes into a folder for later searching.
