Hi all.

Running Server 2003 with Exchange server at work.

One workstation in particular is getting a lot of spam.

Should I get a filter for only that workstation or one that resides on
the server?

Which would you recommend?

Thanks.

Hi - this is not the best group for Exchange questions - it's a Windows
Networking group. The spam filtering wouldn't be a Windows Server thing -
it's an Exchange thing. I'm setting up my reply to crosspost to
microsoft.public.exchange.admin & I suggest you subscribe to that group in
the future.

You need to filter your spam at the server - don't do it at the client
(that's not efficient). If you're running Exchange 2003 SP2, you have a
built in (if rudimentary) spam filter called the Intelligent Messaging
Filter, which can help.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/...-2-IMF-v2.html.
There is also third party software, and even your Exchange aware antivirus
software (which you have, I trust) may have a spam filtering option. Or,
there are services such as MailFoundry, Postini, MX Logix, etc.

Make sure all your users are on Outlook 2003 or 2007 (fully patched) and
using cached mode.

butch...

I would recommend ORF enterprise by vamsoft for antispam. Works really well
and is cheap to. at only $239 per server license (not done per mailbox/user)

Thanks. I'll look into that.

Another quick question, if I might.

I had a couple of candidates that I was going to try on the server
but I became curious and wanted to make sure that they would work on
our system.
I was trying to figure out which email protocol we're using.
I went to a workstation that's running Outlook 2003 and the mail
settings point to the server.
Yet on the server neither the Pop3 nor the IMAP service is running.

How do I tell if Outlook is using Pop3 or IMAP?

I've done a bunch of searching and even bought a couple of good books
and cannot yet find the answer.
Thanks again to all.

If you're connecting to the Exchange server directly & not using Internet
mail, it's using neither - it's using MAPI.
