Sound Problem

I have a Linux server using NIS and about 40 client machines. all machines
can login. The desktops are configured and everything seems to work except
one thing. If more than one client logs on at once one machine will have
sound the others wont. the only thing i can think of is that all the
machines are calling the device from the server which doesnt make a whole
lot of sense. also if i log on as root onto more than one client machine it
works fine and thats because the user is local. any suggestions?
