I see that my exchange will be BB enabled in November. Hurrah...

What do i do next, I have registered my interest with a ISP?

I would like to be able to link 3 PC and a Laptop to the BB, happy to
go Wireless.

Anyone done something similar and what would you suggest to me, of the
kit I should considered.

many thanks

You neeed a modem - to connect and to the translation bit over the ADSL
line, a router - to do the distribution bit from the modem to the pc's you
intend to network and if you wish to go wireless a wireless acces point and
an appropriate number of either PCI, USB or PCMCIA wireless cards.
You will also need a microfilter for every phone outlet.

You can get various combinations of the above equipment - the easiest (?)
way may be to get an all in one solution wireless / modem / router. The
majority of the current crop of these devices only go to a max of 11MB over
the wireless link which is more than adequate for distributing ADSL
connectivity at the theoretical max speed. Higher speed ones are appearing
soon but are really not neccesary for just ADSL distribution and are really
only required for heavy duty networks which in most home set ups is not an
issue.

There are quite a few makes and models around but I would advise that you
try and use the same make of wireless/modem/router and wireless access
cards - they can be a bit fickle when mixing manufacturers.

A few sites may help you out
www.adslguide.org
www.zionmedia.co.uk
www.dslsource.co.uk
www.seg.co.uk
www.solwise.co.uk

I am sure you will get a whole ot more advice as well!

Andy

Thanks for that Andy.

Anyone care to mention a manufacturer of such kit?

I have set up a NetgearDG824M wireless/modem/router with one PC hard wired
on an ethernet port with a 100Meg PCI network card in the PC, I also have a
couple of Netgear USB wireless access cards that I have 1 PC and one Laptop
running. (total cost £203 inc vat and del)
The first DG824M I got locked up after a couple of hours - spoke to Netgear
Support on the phone they were straight to the point "it's zonked mate" I
got it replaced by my supplier straight away.
I have had no problems since. There were a couple of known issues with
earlier firmware, which I never experienced, but firmware upgrades have
sorted those, it was a breeze to set up and use.

I have heard very good reports on the Draytek kit, I have also used Linksys
and D-Link all worked and performed OK. Setting up can be a bit of a black
art with some of these, requiring hooking up through Hyperterm to allocate
mac addresses and channels ID's so if you are unsure on these issues perhaps
you should bear it in mind. The Netgear kit is set up using a web browser
and requires the minimum changes from the defaults to get it going. I
believe the Draytek is similar.

With regard to just the wireless side I did some trials of a lot of the
available hardware about 12 months ago for a project in Manchester
installing wireless networks in schools accross the region, I found that the
some of the most expensive and well known equipment (Intel for one)
performed the worse under the conditions we tested them, we enden up using
D-Link, as much for the bulk buying discount that we could get as opposed to
any significant difference in performance.
Although some did perform particlularly badly none were head and shoulders
above the rest.

Can I recommend Netgear - In my experience, yes I can.
I am sure you will find plenty of other people pointing you to other models
and makes.
