Can anybody report if the Sony Clie works with linux? Will I be able to
access it through USB, or should I just get a universal memcard reader and
access that through mount command, etc?

My TH55 works great with Linux though I don't use the normal desktop
"sync" packages.

The wireless networking through my Linksys Wireless router and Linux
firewall is perfect. I have the linksys router functions turned off
and just use it as an access point with all DHCP, NAT, etc handled by
my Linux firewall/server. Using this setup web browsing, email, ftp,
ssh, telnet, NTP, etc all work normally.

For USB I installed the CardExport utility and makes the TH55 act like
a normal USB storage device. I just connect the TH55, launch
CardExport and mount the device on Linux.

For wireless I installed SmbMate so I can access my Samba and Windows
networking shares from the TH55.

Hope this helps!

PS. I'm not sure if this is a problem with my FreeAgent browser, my
ISP service or not but you set FollowUp to an invalid "alt.linux"
group. I changed it to the valid ones where I have seen your message
in order to allow me to post a response.

Hi,

I work with the PGSJ33. It works really smooth. Do not forget to compile the
module into your kernel. The memory stick can be mounted as a scsi storage
when you start the 'connect to Pc' programm on your PDA. To use this
feature, usb-mass-storage has to be compiled into the kernel (I think this
will also include the scsi stuff). So, no need to buy a reader!

Actually, you shouldn't need CardExport with the TH55. If you look in
your applications there should be a program called "Data Import" that
is part of the basic ROM load of the TH55. When you launch it the Clie
acts as a normal USB storage device. It is also available from the
memory stick icon on the bottom toolbar.

FWIW, I use a copy of VMware to use the Window's hotsync system. If
you just need backup though you could use the MS backup program and
then copy if off of your memory stick.

Finally I haven't used them but the pilot-link tools
(http://www.pilot-link.org) claim to be able support most of the Sony
Clies.

Wow, thanks for that piece of information, I have not read that
anywhere before! It works! :-)

Who says that the Usenet isn't valuable anymore! :-)

Just one point, if you use this feature regularly yourself try the
trial download of CardExport and compare them. I played with both of
them before responding and CardExport is at least 5x faster than "Data
Import", if not more, as I just tried small files and directory lists.
I couldn't see any setting in DataImport that might be effecting its
performance.

Thanks again!

When I just checked on mine I found that Data Import seems
considerably faster for me. With Data Import copying a 81065984 byte
file to the root directory averaged 1:54 while with CardExport II it
averaged 2:43. For copying the same file off of the Clie it took
around 2:06 with Data Import and every time I tried to read a file
while using CardExport it froze my Clie.

As always though YMMV.

I know its been awhile BUT I just had an issue between these 2
utilities ... Data Import vs Card Export.

Normally I connect my Sony to a Linux machine and have no issues using
either method. Recently I tried to connect to a Win 2000 machine at
work. When I used "Data Import" Windows wanted me to install a "Sony"
driver in order to connect. When I used "Card Export" it connected
right away with no request for a driver

I'm not sure if this is also an issue with other versions of Windows
(or Macs) ... perhaps someone could comment?.
