Speed mega bits per second

> full duplex

Communication both directions at same time
Example: telephone conversion

> and half duplex?

Communication in one direction at one time.
Example: email conversion.

10 Mbps means Ten Megabits per second. It is an exercise for the reader
what 100Mbps means. This is the rate at which bits (8
bits to a byte) can flow down the line.
full duplex means it can send and receive at the same time. Half means it
can only send or receive at that rate.

thanks for yours's answer
i have one more queston, why the speed of ethernet card will affect the
connection stability? becasue of my pc connection to the isp is very
unstable, often drop line within 2 or 3mins,this problem is solved since
i have changed the speed of my ethernet card to 100Mbps (Duplex).

thanks!

Hmm.. it might help if you told to what kind of network your ethernet
card is connected - so, what is on the other end of the network cable?

In most cases it's best not to manually touch the card spped/duplex
settings; ethernet devices have ways to automatically negotiate the
best possible values for these. Some 10 years back when 100Mbit/s and
full-duplex connectivity were just making inroads, there were compatibility
problems that required forcing these settings; with anything even near
current hardware the interoperability should be ok.

Sounds like you have a Motorola SB4100 cable modem. Some ISPs pushed
out an SB4100 firmware change that caused that modem to have big
problems when the ethernet interface was running at 10 Mb/s. Here in
the USA there was a lot of wailing about that in the Comcast support
forums. Many people ended up either replacing their modem with a newer
model or upgrading their ethernet card or router.
