Solwise USB Modem won't install on Inspiron 8000

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop which I rebuilt last week with Win XP Pro
(been running XP OK since launch but I wanted to tidy up the machine). I am
trying to install a Solwise SAR900 modem and it will not complete the
install successfully. The install hangs in rasXP.exe and I am left with
error code (10) against the device. I have tried different sets of drivers
from Solwise and other sites but all yield the same end result.

The laptop works fine with a Thomson Speedtouch USB modem (the old BT frog)
so I know the laptop is OK from a hardware and OS viewpoint. I also
refreshed the System partition from a Ghost image between install attempts
so I know I have cleared out any tangled remains from previous failed
installs.

The thing is, on the Solwise forums there is another Inspiron 8000 owner
that has run into identical problems installing this modem but onto Win 2K.

Is this a Dell problem, a Solwise problem or a Windows problem? Thoughts?

Cheers,
Tim.

Have you got SP1 installed? I know that the Binatone USB500 needs it.
May affect others with similar chipset/firmware.

Yep. I'm fully up to date with all MS patches. The original XP install disc
had SP1 included.

XP likes to have drivers installed before the device is found the first
time. If the vendor instructs otherwise specifically, that is an
exception.

I've tried installing drivers and then attaching the device, installing the
drivers, rebooting and then attaching the device, attaching the device and
inserting the install CD when the new hardware wizard starts. I think that's
all combinations. Unfortunately I have install instructions from my ISP (who
supplied the modem) and two sets from Solwise, the manufacturer/distributer.
All the instruction sets vary but as I've tried various drivers and various
installation sequences I am at a loss to know what to do next.

It just seems a strange coincidence that the only other problem experience
I've found in researching this is with another I8000 owner. I can return the
modem for an exchange but I would rather get this working. The drivers are
not MS certified but they are supposed to be XP compatible and I did find an
instruction set for installation specifically onto XP. I suppose the modem
might be faulty but it is recognised correctly when attached and there is
that nagging I8000 coincidence.

Any more ideas?
