I have a 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Cable/DSL Gateway that have
had poor performance while connecting with computers that have had 11b
wireless LAN. Somewhere in the neighbourhoud there is another 11b
accesspoint that I occasionally receive.
The perfomance problem has only been in one direction, downstreams,
where my maximum speed has been about 500kbit/s. Upstreams I managed
higher speed, up to 5Mbit/s.
With the 3Com 11g LAN NIC that was included in the package, the speed
was not an issue, but I had problems with connection, some times I
lost the connection, though the the reception was reported excellent.
This was also noticed often with the 11b cards.
I looked everywere for information and I upgraded to the latest
drivers, but without success. I moved the Gateway to different places,
also without success.
Finally I stumbled in to the solution reading about a problem with
Linksys and lost connections. The solution was simple, change channel
number from the default channel (11) to another (1). Voila, my
problems disapeared and I could now get about 6Mbit/s both upstreams
and downstreams
