Maybe you should advise your friend to wise up ?

I know that, you know that, but your post said 'every router\modem',
and I felt I had to correct it.

Why on earth did you put the CD in your 'puter?

It happens that Motza formulated :
> I need to work out what is what.

I would suggest employing the powers of
<https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=en> if you can talk them
through installing it.

I was told it was the only way to 'register' the modem.

Sorry - I wish I could remember however I uninstalled it all as soon as
I was set up a long time ago. Luckily it is all located in one place in
'add/remove' in 'control panel'. Only thing I kept was 'BT Home Hub'
which allows you to go in and play with all the hub settings such as
wireless, firewall etc. Oh, and part of the offering that I didn't even
install is Norton which I really think is dire - is this what is giving
the messages?

There is a sort of a list under the 'features' tab at...

http://uk.broadband.yahoo.com/wireless-broadband.html

Best of luck but best thing would be to get over there and (paid for or
not) uninstall it all for them. It's buggy at best.

You don't even need that, you can still log in to the HH without
installing any software at all and play with whatever you want.

The only thing that the supplied software does make easier is the
registering for the BBTalk service, but even then if you know the URL
it's almost as easy doing it that way...
