I have a rack mount Win2k3 server (running Exch 2003) that has been
suffering intermittent soft failures on the WAN interface. I won't go into
the details of the hardware as I firmly believe the problem is in software
(at this point). The symptoms are: WAN port becomes unavailable to outside
world, no ping return, port 80 unavailable, port 25 unavailable - the works.
When I remote in through VPN to the LAN interface the link shows up and
active and the public IP returns ping packets over the VPN. Please note that
this server is not RAS enabled, I VPN through a VPN router and connect to the
server through the back door. Diabling/enabling, running the repair routine
and re-booting all fix the problem - although the last two seem to have a
longer lasting effect.
The one thing that has changed in this servers world is switching to a new
spam-filtering service so it is receiving port 25 transfers from a different
system than it used to.
Any thoughts?
