That you seem to be close to the exchange, or the router is reporting "low"
on the line attenuation. Seriously, though, do you have a problem, are you
just curious, or simply seeing whether someone (who has been following any
other questions) can tie this post in to give an overall answer? There
are a few websites which will explain some of the figures and how they
may be important... www.adslguide.org.uk www.kitz.co.uk to name 2.

Just curious dude. I think Demon should provide more than 4Mbp really

you didn't provide any speed information.

If you are on ADSLMax, and only getting 4Mb with those figures then
there is something wrong. It should adjust your speed until the SNR is
around 6, or you reach the maximum of just over 7Mb.

If you are on a fixed speed (I don't know what products Demon offer),
then those figures should mean you have a good solid, stable
connection.

There was no mention of the sync speed, or the equipment in use.

FWIW, although my sync speed has been in the upper 7xxx kbps and up
to 8128 kbps for several months, it is only since changing to an ADSL
2/2+ specific unit that I've seen higher data throughput speeds than
ever before (I moved to DSL Max in May). I had no big problem with
lower speeds, and unlike some, didn't point to my ISP as the cause,
because I have seen enough comments from users of a variety of ISPs,
where the common denominator has always been BTW's network.

I don't bother that much with 'speed test' checking, but know that when
I am downloading (from a variety of sources, streaming audio/video and
at the same time downloading off Usenet, torrents, and podcasts), the
speeds I have seen are routinely in the 5.5 to 6 Mbps area. Quite a
lot more than I'd ever needed for regular use (and it often comes as
a shock when I see after under 24 hours that I've downloaded upwards
of 3 GB... OK, the heavy downloaders might do that regularly, but on
my past use, that's quite a lot of traffic :-)

I believe they started offering DSL Max services in recent times.

I assumed that the 4Mb he mentioned was the speed his router was
reporting.

while I assumed, because he mentioned the ISP, that it was a data transfer
speed he was reporting, given the link to the exchange is (presumably) not
down to Demon itself, but BT Wholesale... and while I've seen sync speeds
in the ~8000 kbps area for several months, only by using to a modern unit
did I see transfer speeds increase significantly. As a 'regular' we can
only hope he'll post a bit more information (!)

I don't know if there have been any comments posted elsewhere about older
units "not being up to the task" but that's my feeling (based on trying
around 8 different units, some a few months old, none claiming ADSL 2/2+
compatibility, and others a few years old, again not claiming it, but
the spec seemed to always show something akin to 'up to 8000 kbps', and
these are the ones I've had lower speeds on now matter the time of day
or any other variables I have tried to take into consideration).

Thanks for the interest I have a Solwise Billion Home Plug Modem router
