SNMP Infrastructure

Hi,

I'd like some guidance with setting up a SNMP management infrastructure.
Admittedly, SNMP has never been my strong suit so I'm looking for some
recommendations on how to set up a basic SNMP mgmt system.

I just finished deploying several Nortel Passport chassis switches, Baystack
5510s and several APC 5000/1400 series UPS units all of which offer SNMP
MIBS for mgmt. I also have several other devices [workstations, Firewall/VPN
boxes etc] that offer MIBS for SNMP.

I know I need a central management station for traps to be sent to but I'm a
bit foggy on what software I can use for the overall SNMP mgmt. I've mapped
out what community strings I'll use for read and write but I'm unsure of how
to tie it all together to one central point of administration? Can I
configure a single station to accept all the trap messages from all my
devices? All the Servers and WSs are Windows 2000, all the switches are
Nortel and all the UPS units are APC.

Any advise from experience or pointers to good doc would be much
appreciated.

TIA,
Reg

Reg-

You can setup a single device to accept all traps and thats the suggested
way. You can use something like WhatsUp Gold as the manager. There are linux
based managers as well (Nagios). The best site to learn more about SNMP is
http://www.wtcs.org/ . I have managed everything from servers to UPS's to
printers so you should have no problem there. Good luck and have fun.

Thank you NetEng.

The wtcs.org site has taken a great deal of the mystery out of handling
SNMP. This site should be looked upon as a true jewel of the Internet for
its authors efforts at de-mystifying SNMP if nothing else.

Anyone wishing to get a true grip on deploying and leveraging SNMP should
beat a path to Garth's site and settle in for a good read.

If you are looking for a tool, that help managing network, check adrem
netcrunch. When you install it, you will find a documentation describing the
SNMP infrastructure (I think that it's also available somwhere on the
website). Here is the link to the program homepage:
http://www.adremsoft.com/netcrunch/index.php.
