Hello!

I was trying to get a look at my network using misc. tools but even with a
big talk about the danger of sniffer I couldn't actually find one that was
working with a Wi-fi card?

I tryed etherreal and packetyzer but they juxt dont cath anything from the
card...? I dont see why a wireless network is any different to snif from a
wire network, the protocol and everything else is the same once your on a
network!?

I'm I missing something?

Maybe because a wired network and wireless network don't function the same?

Yes. Read this for a brief introduction to the issues:

http://www.linkferret.ws/wireless/promiscuous.htm

Also, if you're using Linux, there are hacks available to place certain cards
into promiscuous mode.

It depends on whether you are trying to see normal stuff like Ethernet, IP,
TCP, HTTP, etc., or if you're trying to see 802.11-specific frames. If
you're just trying to see normal stuff, any packet capture program should
work. I use Ethereal with my wireless NIC all the time, but it doesn't show
me any 802.11-specific stuff. Since you said Ethereal didn't catch
"anything," I thought that maybe you weren't after just the 802.11-specific
stuff.

Ethereal running on Windows XP will not capture anything but traffic on the
local XP comm stack. It will not capture traffic between two external wifi
stations.

In order to monitor all wifi traffic, you must have a driver that is capable
of putting the wifi adapter in promiscous mode, to capture raw 802.11
frames. There are drivers that can do this with certain chipsets on Linux,
but I still haven't found any freeware drivers that will do it on XP. There
are proprietary drivers that can, but these are packaged with expensive
commercial sniffers.

FWIW, I keep a cheap Linksys hub permanently inserted between my ADSL modem
and my wifi router. I leave a CAT5 cable permanently plugged in, and when I
want to monitor all of my WLAN/internet traffic, I use Ethereal via
promiscuous Ethernet to see it as it flows between the modem and the router.
Of course, this is post-NAT, so I have to adjust IP addresses and ports.
This is also useful for debugging router startup issues.

So basicaly, sniffing a wireless network is kind of hard to do and it would
require a complicated setup so I don't really have to fear for scriptkiddies
listening on my network?! That's great, in some way!

And since I don't operate a large network that could be of any intress to
anyone I am pratically safe on that side!?

Thanx!

Try Netstumbler

Netstumbler is not a sniffer, it's a stumbler. It only discovers SSIDs.

A sniffer is essentially a network analyzer. It is able to trap network
traffic at the MAC frame level, and to display each frame in both raw and
formatted modes. Ethereal is an excellent freeware analyzer that works fine
on Ethernet and other wired media. But is does not work with wifi on XP
machines. As far as I know, there aren't any freeware sniffers that work on
XP, at least not yet.
