SMTP on BT Broadband

OK, a buddy called me tonight regarding his new connection to BT Broadband,
haveing just realised they provide him no kind of email. A little research
later and I discover that they do not even provide an SMTP server.

Obviously he could use Yahoo / hotmail etc, but that is not ideal.

If he wishes to use Outlook Express, how can he do it? He can still receive
his former ISP POP3 account, but just can't reply. Are there any free SMTP
servers out there he could use (reliable ones that aren't used for SPAM!)?
What are his options? Is he best to install a small mail server on his
computer (an old Pentium 3 running Windows 98)?

Thanks for the advice.

Robin - very happy with my new PIPEX ADSL connection that went live today
:-))))

If you go to an ISP of your choice and register for a dial up pay as you go
account, you will get email & SMTP.

You didn't say who your email is with, but I presume it's not BT Broadband,
so go to whoever your email account is with and register for Pay as you go
with them which will enable you to use their SMTP server.

With some ISP's you will need to log in via Pay as you go about once a month
to keep the account active, with others you won't. The rest of the time you
will be able to send email on your broadband connection.

Well, I have NTL but I'm still using my UKFSN (UK Free Software Network)
account for sending/receiving emails (I don't trust NTL's servers for
reliability and also want to be able to send email using my own domain
name - which I couldn't do with NTL). They do a free account but that
requires dialing up to their servers for an hour or so a month, so I went
with their 'Standard' membership option which is £15 a year and provides you
with an SMTP server (using SMTP auth) and a POP3 server (with additional POP
boxes for free) along with a (basic) news server and a web server with
MySQL, Perl, PHP etc. I'm very pleased with them. http://www.ukfsn.org

You can use BTOpenworlds mail servers, I use BTB and use their pop3 and
smtp. All you need is a PAYG account with them. They will also let you
dial in on their non 0845 number which suits me as I can dial in on the
laptop/mobile to keep my connection live. Other than that I use VPOP3
from PS Software. Not free, but secure and easy enough to set up.

I use www.claranews.com
10.00 GBP/year for usenet access plus they give SMTP and (I believe) an
email address.

You can use Hotmail via Outlook Express.
Alternatively you can sigh up for free email with gmx.net,
BUT these days their website is German only,
plus you have to confirm your address to them by fax.
Failing that switch to better and cheaper BB provider like PlusNet !
Regards,
Martin
