I'm running SME 5.6

I need to use it as a secure gateway. Somebody said that it's full of holes.
Somebody else described SME as "broken" and somebody else described it as
"Red Hat with all the good bits taken out".

What I want is to have my server running securely. I want to access the
Internet through it (via a modem). I have several computers to connect via
LAN to the server. I don't want to use a hub. I want to use direct cable
connections from the pcs to the server. The server is a PC without a
monitor/keyboard/mouse. It has a CD unit, floppy drive and two hard drives
that I told SME to use as a RAID pair.

Now how do I achieve my goal? Is SME a pile of donkey droppings as most
people have suggested or is it possible to use it safely and securely. I
don't want to be pointed at websites - I just want a concise explanation I
can follow.
