SMC7004VWBR - Can't update firmware.

I bought a SMC7004VWBR at CompUSA yesterday. I have everything setup. Got
an SMC 2632W cardbus card setup in my laptop. Connection thus far seems
fine. Am restricting access by MAC filtering. All good. Able to browse
and transfer files just fine.

However, I cannot update the firmware on the router. I have downloaded the
file from SMC's site multiple times and extracted it (on both my desktops),
and every time I try to flash it says "Upload Data Error. Please make sure
your file is correct..." The file I am downloading from SMC's page for the
7004VWBR is: 7004VWBR_FWv123.zip. I extract and point to the corresponding
..bin file for the update. Every time I get the "Upload Data Error."

I have tried both at "factory default settings" and with my specific
settings. I have tried with only one computer connected and have tried with
everything connected (cable modem, both desktops, etc.). It will not work.

Runtime Code Version:
V1.00.005
Boot Code Version: V1.00.01
Hardware Version: 01

The thing I am questioning is that on one of SMC's product pages, it
indicates that the part number for the VWBR is 720.638. It also tells you
to look on the bottom of the product for your part number. Well, mine is
720.9821. Anyone know what the appropriate firmware update file for that
part number may be (if this is the issue)? Better yet, anyone know what a
720.9821 really is?

I have not contacted tech support yet, but that may well be the next step.
Any suggestions?

I bought the same Router yesterday and I have EXACTLY the same
problem. I waisted 3 hrs on this and still can not figure it out. I
emailed tech support but nothing yet.

Likewise, if you hear from tech support please let me know as I have not
done that yet. I searched the groups archive at google, but the only article
I found with a similar error was in German - which I can't read.

That is also outstanding news from the standpoint of support for the
routers that don't work well under heat conditions, or just generally... I
don't know what the problem is.
Perhaps they will warranty exchange with the new one.
As well as new buyers getting a better product.

Honestly don't know. Haven't even looked at the rebate form yet. Though I
only have a rebate for the router - I think. I don't believe the pcmcia
card I bought had a rebate on it. I would assume though if both have
rebates that you can send in for both. I myself would probably send them in
in separate envelopes. Probably less confusing for the processing people.

Whew, thought I was the only one in the world...
I cannot find that part number ANYWHERE. I'm thinking SMC through
together a "special" for Comp-USA. Maybe haven't had time to get the
files up yet? I put in a request... If I get anything back, I'll let
you know.
