SMC7004AWBR

After my SMC7004AWBR is on for a few days response gets very sluggish and I
have to bounce the router and the response is back to being as responsive as
ever. This situation is even worse when I am hooked up with a VPN running on
a PC behind the router where it becomes sluggish, painfully so, after just a
few hours of work. Is this normal? Is there something that I can do about
it? Do I simply need to get a more up-to-date router?
