Has anyone heard of a PCMCIA card for connecting to 802.11b that doesn't
stick out of the side of a laptop when you have it plugged it?

I'd like to get one that I can just leave in the laptop.

What model laptop do you have ? Some have internal WiFi as an option.
My compaq is almost 2 years old and it has the option.

Check with the manufacturer.
