microsoft.public.windows.server.networking:

I installed SBS 2003 Premium two days ago for my SOHO network. About an hour ago, my workstation on my LAN started having network problems -- somehow it had a strange IP address. So, I tried an "ipconfig /renew". This reported that no DHCP server could be found. Looking on the server, I am unable to find a control/ administration applet for DHCP. Looking under Services, I only see a DHCP client. STFW gave me some discuss about the DHCP server needs to be enabled in AD; I would think that the appropriate SBS setup wizard would have done that, but I guess I'd better check...

Any suggestions?

TIA,

David

You need to set up the DHCP server on your SBS server manually & create the
scope(s). SBS tends to "wizard" everything, which I personally dislike, but
you can do it manually if you wish.

David,

By default, during the SBS integrated install it would install and configure
DHCP with a scope for the subnet of the internal nic.. (by default the
internal nic IP address would be 192.168.16.2).. Was there another
server/device that was/is acting as a DHCP server on the network? for
example, a router that has a DHCP server enabled? If you are not seeing the
DHCP Server service listed, then you could go into Control Panel Add/Remove
Programs Add/Remove Windows Components/Networking Services to add DHCP..
You will want to make sure that you activate the DHCP server, add a scope
for your internal range (excluding the server's IP address.. default
exclusion would be 192.168.16.1 - 192.168.16.9), add scope options to
specify the DNS server to be the SBS server's IP address, WINS server
pointing to the SBS server's IP address, node type of 0x8 (hybrid), and the
router (default gateway) option to the appropriate address. you will also
want to make sure that if you have two network cards in the server that the
DHCP server is only bound to the server's internal IP address.

Hope that helps,

Hmmm - I just did a clean SBS 2003 install and had to set up my DHCP server
manually. Or maybe I just cancelled out of one of the gazillion wizards.
Don't know; I'm a control freak!

Thanks for the help! :-

I fumbled around with it for a while, did a re-install, manually installed & configured DHCP, and now everything seems okay. My guess is that my client box had a IP from my previous DHCP server (SmoothWall) and that it kept using that IP until the lease expired (or some such)
