Slow Wireless

Apologies if this is a common question, but I have done a fair bit of
searching with no solution.

I have a 54Mbs router (of the el cheapo type), with two PCs connected to the
wired ports and three PCs that connect wirelessly. Usually, only one of the
wireless PCs are connected at any given time.

Recently, I hace noticed a drastic reduction is speed on the wireless side.
It can sometimes take up to 20 mins to transfer 1MB of data. Obviously the
wired connection does it instantly. I understand my wireless was never as
quick as the wired but it has never been this slow.

I have

updated the firmware in the router
connected using the LAN port and the connection was fine
formatted one wireless PC with no improvement
mucked about with settings in the router wireless setup(no improvement so
changed back)
reset router to factory default settings
moved a wireless PC right next to the router
used various programs to adjust windows registry settings
checked for other wireless networks using netstumbler - found another 2 in
range but with very poor signals.

I'm looking to buy another router but i'm not sure if this would actually
fix the problem.

If you can offer any advice/suggestions, they would be most welcome.

Wireless is SHARED.
If the other PCs are not transferring at the same time, then look for
interference.

Try another channel number.

Thanks for the suggestion; I have tried all channels from 1 to 13, and the
router is set to automatically select at the moment.

Still no joy.

Occasionally it may help to move the devices just a few inches when
signal fading is at its worst.

Then have a look at your environment - are there any large objects made
of metal?

Last but not least there are a several other technologies competing with
wlan for its frequencies like wireless video transmission, bluetooth,
zigbee and so on - even microwave ovens may intefere with your wlan.

You see wlan is only fun as long as it works ... ;-)

Greetings

I do have numerous bluetooth devices(Phones, PDAs, Laptops etc) but I have
either turned them off or unplugged where appropriate.

I decided to order an 802.11n router and wireless card, they should arrive
around Wed, so hopefully this will do the trick.

Thanks for your help guys.

Upgreade either to N standard, or try a different approach with the network by
conveting over to those Powerline type network adapters. They use you house
wiring.

Dont forget if you have an Xbox 360 close to your router or in your house
period, it can cause all sorts of havok with your wifi since its wireless
controllers use the same frequencies.

That was the problem here when I decided to display internet TV on the
existing TV.

The double metal tubing of the heavy steel slow combustion stove was an
obvious problem.

Less obvious was the two lines of racking in the garage loaded with boxes
of various computer and electrical cables.

When I think about it, it is a wonder I could get any signal.

Was this the group where someone chased interference down to his
rechargeable electric toothbrush? Seemed the toothbrush used a wireless
link back to the base station to advise certain situations.
