Slow Responses/ Windows Server 2003

I'm really hoping that someone out there can really give me a hand with a
major problem I'm having in my Windows network. First just let me explain
that my Windows network is simple, one physical location, one 3Com switch, 40
workstations running Windows XP Pro, and 5 servers runnng Windows Server 2003
with SP2. Here is the issue:

Every Windows XP workstation and member server are slow in resolving names,
surfing on the Internet, going to a command prompt window and just runing the
following commands are slow: ping, netstat, ipconfig, net view and so on...
when I run those commands the response for the command to execute is about 3
to 4 minutes and this is hapenning everywhere, but the ONLY server that seems
to act normal here is the Domain Controller, is the ONLY server that is NOT
slow.

What things I checked? Well, I already verified IP settings on all member
servers, DHCP server assigining IPs to clients has the correct settings, WINS
is normal, my ISP router/gateway is fine, I did some Network Monitor packets
on a few member servers and found nothing, I checked the switch port settings
and all is normal... what else can I check or does anyone know what my issue
may be...

This one has being the most challeging one yet as I cannot figure out what
is causing this slow responses...

Hello Erasmo,

Did you configure all servers and workstations to point only to your INTERNAL
DNS server? Please post an ipconfig /all from one problem machine and your
DC/DNS server here.

Your primary dns suffix is promtl.local and your connection specific is companyname.ca?

Yeah I replaced that one there to try to use a test lab, but anyway do you
have an idea ? What are you trying to find by using ipconfig info? I have one
DC which is hosting the DNS, DHCP and WINS services. The DC DNS is th
eprimary DNS for all member servers and workstations, then the DNS has
forwards to the outside to my ISP DNS servers. I'm trying to find a logical
explanation as to why all the computers are slow when executing any type of
commands, kind of like is thinking before giving me an answer to what I'm
asking...

Hello Erasmo,

The reason for ipconfig.

Very often a NIC configuration is pointing to the loopback interface for
DNS for example or the ISP's DNS are configured on workstations and servers
instead of the internal DNS server, which is the only one that should be
used in a domain in private network's.

Did you run dcdiag /v and netdiag /v to check for errors on your DC?

hi

Just typing this in case its helpful to those lookin 4 a resolution.

A similar issue happend to me and disabling the WINS option under the
Local area connection properties, solved the issue.

As the PC was trying to contact DCs during each network related command
execution.
